How Tesla’s Battery Mastermind Is Tackling EV's Biggest Problem

  • Gepubliceerd op 2 maanden geleden

    CNBC

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere - in phones, laptops, tablets, cameras and increasingly cars. Demand for lithium-ion batteries has risen sharply in the past five years and is expected to grow from a $44.2 billion market in 2020 to a $94.4 billion market by 2025, mostly due to the boom in electric cars. And a shortage of lithium-ion batteries is looming in the U.S.

Former Tesla CTO and Elon Musk's right-hand man, JB Straubel, started Redwood Materials in 2017 to help address the need for more raw materials and to solve the problem of e-waste. The company recycles end-of-life batteries and then supplies battery makers and auto companies with materials in short supply as EV production surges around the world. Straubel gave CNBC an inside look at its first recycling facility in Carson City, Nevada. Watch the video to learn why battery recycling will be an essential part in making EV production more sustainable.

How Tesla’s Battery Mastermind Is Tackling EVs Biggest Problem

çağlar akyiğit
çağlar akyiğit

Yeah, the idea and recycling of these batteries are great but I believe the main problem is the high demand and promotion for personal car use. If we want a safe and clean environment, we need to support public transport, mobility, bicycle use. Not cars; electric or not it doesn't matter. Electric cars aren't the solution for traffic intensity in cities. And let's not forget that electric production isn't clean in most of the countries all around the world.

around the end of the 19th century, big cities were worried they would drown in horse manure. then came a little invention called the "internal combustion engine". Now we may end up drowning in dumped batteries of all kinds and ŝhapes. Teĉhnology is like "wiping ice": you don't just solve problems, you swap the problems (Manure x Air Pollution x Landfill nightmare.....)

Electric cars are not the future. It’s nice to have them and fun to drive In them but in the next 10 to 15 years we will be having dead batteries as waste and will pollute the environment.. we have had cars powered by diesels and petrol so why don’t we work on cars powered by water.. which is more environs friendly..

people laugh and mock hydrogen fuel cell... they don't understand the reason why scientist support this seemingly "stupid" idea was that it can be scale without limit, we already knew there would be a supply limit to li ion. trying to scale it up only add to the amount of pollution and environmental damage in the world, it was always intended to be just a stop gap technology before fuel cell(long term) and solid state battery(short term) can take over as energy storage solution.

Of course they can take "all these really good materials and just dump them." It happens all the time. If the raw materials were cheaper than the recycled ones that's what would happen. It depends on profit and the ability to pass the real costs to someone or something else. We shouldn't be naive. This is capitalist profit for production. It is not production for human need.

So if the premise of this video is sustainability then why didn’t they mention the holders of GREEN recycling patents? Oh right because all the wealthy investors have put millions into Li-cycle (not publicly traded) and they want to protect their investment. American Manganese has been struggling against short-selling and lack of publicity despite having a green process (no smelting) fully patented and proving viable. If CNBC actually cared about the environment they would have done some actual research instead of just forwarding the marketing pitch from the established names in the game. #allaboutmoney

And by the way, the number of batteries available for recycling is at least ten times of that shown. Tell the truth, so-called recycling of used batteries is a big problem now, and is going to be a horrendous problem in the near future.
