The BIGGEST used HiFi bargains might be the SMALLEST

Collectors aren’t interested in Mini HiFi systems from twenty years ago - this means their prices aren't getting jacked up in the same way as old boomboxes and separates. Therefore used examples can make a good buy for anyone on a budget who just wants a compact system to play various physical music formats with minimum fuss. I bought one to see what I got for my money.

You might also be interested in the similar CMT-CP500MD - they seem quite common too - so here's another ebay UK Affiliated link ebay.us/XrmkQi

*I just wanted to add a warning that there appears to be a common issue with the cassette decks refusing to rewind or fast forward on these devices - check these features work before buying one.

The Mini Electric Screwdriver I’m using in this video is a Wowstick Mini - while it doesn’t have sufficient torque to loosen tight screws - it can be twisted just like a normal screwdriver at the start to loosen the screw then the electric motor can take over to do the rest of the work. I like the fact it’s narrow, has LED lights in the end and comes with a load of bits (there are usually two options available - one comes with more bits). Here are some Amazon Affiliated links

    NEW MINI HiFi
New Mini HiFis are still made but the only legacy physical media they'll play is the CD - if you want to play your Tapes or Minidiscs you'll be looking at the used market.
Here is a link to some examples of current models.

    UPDATES -
    1) CD CLICKING SOUND. A few patrons have advised me that they also have this model and their CD mech clicks too - it seems the tolerance for that plastic disc clamp is just too fine and they've mostly warped enough over the years so that they now fail to perfectly clear a horizontal plastic beam located just above the 'petals' and as they brush against it it makes a clicking sound until the disc spins up to full speed. So yes it's a design flaw, but not one that means anything is failing - it's just slightly annoying.
    2) DOLBY PATENTS. The message about Dolby on the back will be referring to the Minidisc - apparently some Dolby Patents are involved in these.

    Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
    A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

I might be mistaken with this unit, but regarding the CD drive most units I have come across have a very small pinhole (1-2 mm maybe, paperclip metal thickness) that releases the mechanism of the tray, which would allow it to be opened without power. Around the 16:35 mark in the video you can see the pinhole I'm talking about, there is a very small dark dot approx 1.25" from the 'top' of the drive tray (based on the unit's vertical orientation during that part of the video), that could be the release mechanism.

I worked in a Radio Shack when the mini systems just started coming out. I remember people being absolutely amazed that something so small could be more then loud enough for their home. The trend at the time were these monster huge speaker systems that could probably blast half a stadium. And the mini's were also cheap!! I must have been selling 3-4 units every couple of days compared to one or two a month with the expensive larger units.

Many thanks for such a nice video.. Something I really miss these days.. I had a Philip MCM-195 (cassette deck with CD player but no mp3 or usb port) few years back which I bought in 2005 but needed a bit of repair.. My wife probably threw it away (due to lack of space) when I got Panasonic SA-PM250 in 2018 which can read mp3 from usb & CD-audio & cost half the price.. When I see your video, I begin to regret what I did.. 😢

Hey Techmoan, I dont know if that information will be any use for you, but Ive made an observation that cassette players stuck around a lot longer in cars, and since they were sold in quality brand cars they also offer a great quality. They offer auto reverse, track selection and they are overall very robust and most of the times very cheap. If one would overlook lack of recording ability and put it in neat box with 12V power supply, he would have a great cassete player/ fm radio

Picked up a sony cmt cp 33 (i think that's it).. similar idea but the tape is behind the display which is cool... when i demo'd it in currys in 2001 it sounded better than all the other rivals.. DSG i can't remember what that stood for .. dynamic sound generator.. does give the sound more dynamics brightens everything up and adds a bit of bass.. You mentioned the speaker connectors.. Sharp used them on some home cinema systems .. as i used to refurbish them in the early 2000s. Was easier to plug in 6 of them than 12 bare wires.. i think the ends where colour coded though (or may be thinking of the wires having a colour code on the tape) look up the sharp htcn400 perhaps.. pretty sure that system used the same plugs / connectors..

I picked up a CP500MD for £45 which has the type R Minidisc format and the Hi-Speed recording is only 2x not 4x. Other than that it is virtually the same as the CP505MD. It had no remote but you can buy replacement new RM Series remotes on Ebay which I did for £11.45 and which do all the functions of the original remote. Fortunately my machine wasn't dusty and everything works perfectly. The CP500MD has standard speaker clamp connections for bare wires.

Bought a CMT-CPX11 earlier this year for 30€ because I wanted small shelf speakers that wouldn't be bland. Very good choice, but for anyone looking for CMT-models, look at the instructions for the models first. Lower impedance models like the 4ohm CPX11 come with the same 0,75mm^2 speaker wiring as higher impedance models, so an upgrade to the wiring is necessery for CPX11 if you want any sound to come out of the speakers. I personally redid my speakers with 2,5mm^2 wiring and the difference was night and day.

So these are still around, but they are a bit different. LG makes the most popular version of this, the xboom and Sony has another, the muteki that is highly popular in latin america. It's not as ubiquituous as these older mini systems use to be, people listened to a lot of radio back then. Now FM is more for news and information or listening in the car. But at home, people would faster play the TV with youtube, or use earbuds off their phone. But some, in the developing world, like a nice stereo. My neighbours, 2 of them have the xbooms. The lg xboom is damn loud. You should take a look at them.

I'm curious what would be the best bargain for a decent cassette tape player (nor perfect but also not terrible) to convert cassettes to digital. Obviously none of the recent stuff with built-in USB or MP3 conversion but just something that would be good enough for cassettes that aren't already available in digital formats.

The lines on the side of the casing is not only for looks but also to provide more stiffness to the thin sheet metal. Like you see in corrugated sheets for roofing and what not. And when they had to make those lines, they could as well have them line up with the fake lines in the front of the unit :)

Morning Nice page - Always interesting themens ans not the typical you tube "in your face" prsentation. on this presentaion, I just completed a enclosed pavilion in the garden.Looking for a source of music i did a "E***y Safari" and came across a similar unit to yours namely, the Sony CMT-CP500MD Very similar spec CC, MD CD & Tuner. and at the back Phonos 75 ohm ariel connection, & a optical link this model has proper spring-speaker connections. The unit i bought came with the Remote and speakers. all bought for the princely sum of Eur29 about 25 quid. reason for this unit was the phonos on the rear.. I connected a BT 5.0 reciever to the phonos and you have a internet radio / music streamer either from a tablet or smart phone. In my case i ditched the speakers and matched it with some Aiwa speakers. All in all, well built good quality. i agree if you look around you will always fid somthing nice PS i earlier this week tried the cassette for the first time. was pleasently suprised must be a case of "old tech on old ears" have a good one & stay safe

DSG is short for DSGX or Dynamic Sound Generator eXtender (in my manual) or eXtra in another Sony manual. it boosts the bass and vocals. I just tried mine and it is hard to notice. I'll leave it off for another 20 years. SPEAKER PLUGS. Although they are used on various other devices; they are hard to get. I use a molex female to 4 wire strip so I can easily screw in any pair of speakers. Molex sockets are found in old PC power supplies for hard drives, CDs etc.

Hi, your video had the result you speak of at the end..... I wanted one too :-) I'm a retired Dutch engineer living in Spain, so I went looking on one of the local second hand websites. Long story short: I managed to find a similar device, a CMT CP33MD I was able to restore it by cleaning, replacing the band for opening and closing the CD drawer, also the bands for fast forward/rewind, and play inside the cassette unit, that is auto reverse as well. The minidisc needed cleaning as well, there was a lot of dust and soot inside. It also came with wooden speakers and a working remote. I love how it was put together, really easy to remove the individual units. Thanks for your video, stay safe. Leo

Interesting video. How about making a video with recommendations for the people who actually doesn't care about physical media but they want to listen to high quality digital files on the stereo speakers? Maybe something with the CD and radio but not necesarrily. My solution for now is files on the NAS, app on the phone, Bluetooth connected to the amp and speakers. But it could be better, maybe more integrated in one device. Price should be not too crazy as well :)

Really enjoyed this video. I've got the slightly earlier CMT-CP500MD purchased from Comet (there's a name from the past), in September 2001 for £330! It's still used most days for CDs and radio. I listen to digital stations via a bluetooth receiver and cheap tablet. Sound quality has always been great - better than the JVC stack it replaced when the JVC died quite suddenly and was beyond repair. It'll be a sad day when the Sony finally dies.

I think the biggest drawback with this idea is the probable condition of the cassette deck. I've seen several of these for sale in charity shops, including quite respectable Sony and Panasonic ones, but it is quite common to see a label attached stating "Cassette not working" or "Cassette faulty". I imagine replacing drive belts on these would be very difficult.
